Choosing a Color Pallet

Choosing a color pallet can be daunting, especially when you're starting from scratch. But, fear not! I've got the formula for you.

For this formula, we will need to look at this color wheel:

First, you choose a color. It doesn't matter which one. Then, you find the complimentary color (directly opposite). After you find that complimentary color, you can use that color and/or the colors on either side as your secondary or accent color.

If you'd like to use three or more colors, here are a few ideas that will help you choose your color scheme:

Here are some tiny tips to consider before you nail down your new scheme:

1. Make sure you select a color that would compliment any adjacent/open rooms

2. Make sure it's not a major departure from the rest of your home's style/decor/colors

3. Be sure to select a scheme that will afford you some longevity. There is nothing worse than having to redo a brand newly done room because fashions in style and color change.

4. Ask, how you want to feel in that room? Cooler colors (blue, purple & green) promote relaxation, whereas warmer colors (yellow, orange & red) promote vitality and emotion.

Do you want to feel relaxed?                                                     Do you want to feel happy?
Green or blue                                                                                Yellow or Orange

Do you want to fuel your passion or appetite?                 Do you want to feel clean and fresh?
Red/deep purple                                                                       Stick to a white or cream color

5. Consider the function of the room. You wouldn't paint a sun room black or a media room white.

6. Finding an inspiration piece that you love - fabric, ceramics, clock, painting, rug, whatever you want - can also help jumpstart your color scheme. For more on this, visit a previous post here.

7. Another way to find a new color scheme, is to look at pictures or inspiration rooms until you find one that you love.

How do you choose your color pallets? Is there any one method you think will work for you?
