Global style is quickly gaining momentum in the design world, but it can be tricky to pull off for the DIY-er. Here are a few guidelines to help you create that Travelled look.
1. My personal preference - Don't use leopard in your home. (I'm not talking about a modern interpretation of leopard like this):
I'm talking about the classic, cheap-looking leopard that you'd find in Vegas. As I said, this is a personal preference. If you love leopard, by all means use it. (But, send me some pictures. I'd love to be proven wrong)
2. Mixing metals creates the eclectic and collected look.
3. Rich fabrics like leather and damask create the traditional feel in most global styled spaces.
4. Create vignettes that tell a story. It's a great way to display your treasures from your travels and they are great conversation starters.
5. Lighting is important. Make sure to have lower and warmer lighting. Lamps with fabric lampshades are a great way to create that glow.
6. Consider using travel themed art and accessories. A framed vintage map or sepia travel photo from the 30 or 40s would be beautiful. You could also get some vintage aviator goggles or an old wood plane propeller to decorate a blank wall or a blank spot on a flat surface.
7. A big traditional rug like this one will give you the inspiration you need to pick other colors.
8. Collecting items to use in a room that is supposed to look like it's been collecting stuff for a long time...can take a long time. Be patient and thoughtful. It will come together eventually and be exactly what you've been wanting.
These tips should give you a good map of how to create that global style in your home. Even if you're not a fan of the traditional global style, I hope these tips help you display your found things in your home.
