Bedrooms, Bedrooms, Bedrooms!

Bedrooms can make or break your day, but are often the most neglected room in your home. If you think about your decor priorities logically, your bedroom should be first on the decorating list because it is where you spend most of your time, relax at the end of a hard day, and heal from sickness.

You might ask yourself, "Well, that's all well and good, but where do I start?" Excellent question. I would start my new bedroom design with picking your style, or an inspiration for your design. If you are not sure what your style is, This post from the Cheap Chic archives can help you figure out to what style you gravitate. Also make sure to pick no more than three colors for your space. Decide which will be most prominent and which will be accent colors.

Once you find an inspiration or jumping-off point, start shopping your own home. Look in other rooms, at your extra stuff in your attic or garage, or even ask your friends if they're getting rid of home decor items. Great items come from anywhere. Next, look at thrift stores and yard sales. I have found some of my best pieces at thrift stores. Just look for sturdy furniture with great lines. TIP - Never buy linens second-hand. There's something off-putting about sleeping on someone else's gross, even after you've washed it a few times. Make sure to get fresh, clean, and new linens. The "gathering process" can be lengthy, especially if you are new to this process. A great way around that is to shop online and keep a pinboard of your progress. This can be physical or electronic. You could even follow my "Bedrooms" board on Pinterest. (Just click the Green Pinterest logo on the right sidebar)

Once you've gathered all of your furniture, accessories & plans, now comes the fun part. You get to put your room together! There are almost no rules to arranging your bedroom. One designer trick is to put the bed on the opposite wall as the entrance, to create drama, and make the room feel larger. Play with your arrangement until you love it. Remember, this is your bedroom where you spend the most time in your home. Make it work for you.

Consider making an upholstered headboard, or hanging a salvaged wood door as a headboard. Both are foolproof and create an easy focal point in the room.

Bedding is crucial! Check out my post all about bedding here.. The main tip to remember about bedding is to splurge on your sheet set, and you can have a smaller budget for the other bedding. Soft or scratchy has a major impact on how well you sleep. You cannot afford to skimp on the sheets.

I hope this gave you a few tips for your bedroom rehab. We have some amazingly exciting posts coming up, including our very first contributor post from Nancy, my dear friend from Rexburg. She's made the most beautiful bench and hanging area for her home and she's going to tell us all about how she did it.
