Designing a Room is Like Picking an Outfit

We've all seen those beautifully executed outfits splattered all over Pinterest, just like these:

But, have you ever thought that the same principles apply to picking out the perfect outfit and designing a room? We dress ourselves every day. I'd say we all have experience putting together an outfit, so why not use that experience to your advantage?

It all starts with a good base. In these outfits, the base is denim. It goes with everything and is extremely versatile. In any room, the base is the large furniture. The living room needs neutral big furniture, the kitchen needs neutral cabinets.

Now that we have the base, it's time to add the secondary layer. In the first outfit, the secondary layer is navy the second outfit has white and the third has navy as well. These colors will complement the accent color and still work well with the base. This secondary color is what ties the base to the accent color, so make sure to choose a color that will complement both. These pieces in your room would be the rug, wall color or a piece of furniture.

The accent color is the pop of the outfit and the room. These are the orange, red and brown in the outfits above. They complement the base and secondary colors and bring the entire outfit together. I used these outfits to find rooms using the same principles and they are the same.

So, the next time you design a room, consider looking at your closet! It's a wonderful place to start.
