How to Fill a Large Space

Sometimes, if you're lucky, you end up with large spaces to fill with furniture. (Like a Great Room, or a Basement Common Area) Filling this space is difficult, but here are a few tricks that will help you furnish it.

First as always, you figure out the function of the room. Is it going to be a combined living and dining room? Game room? Playroom?

Figuring out the function of the room will help you with the next step, large furniture pieces. If you have a game room, your large furniture pieces would be a pool table, ping pong table, card table, etc. If you have a playroom, it might be a bookshelf, large area rug, and toy storage.

Next, if your room is irregularly shaped, divide it up on paper. Here's an example of one way to divide up a great room:

The possibilities are endless. If you already have a dining area, you can make one area just a seating area, and another one the entertainment area, or play area, etc. Within the areas, you would furnish it as its own room. Always keep the other room's furnishings in mind.

Dividing these rooms can seem challenging as well, but a few tricks that I've picked up will help you work wonders in your space:

Area rugs work great to ground a space and different, but coordinating rugs will help your eye divide the spaces.

Two - sided furniture, if you can find it, acts as a great room divider and will fill visual space.

Different color schemes can also visually separate the room.

The main thing to remember is that it takes time to fill a large space. Take time to live in the space as you furnish it to see how it works for you.

Here is an example of a great room that I whipped up on the Homestyler App..

It serves multiple functions, and is still beautiful. I used the same color scheme and same modern style furniture throughout the kitchen, dining area, and living area. I then grounded the space with area rugs, and used the back of the couch as a divider.

I hope this list of tips will help you in decorating your cavernous spaces. **As always, don't forget to like Cheap Chic on Facebook, Twitter-@cheapchicincGoogle+, and Tumblr!**
