We have all been there. We have a room to decorate, but we have no budget. Here are some ideas for ways to decorate or change a room for no money.
1. Rearrange your furniture.
Simply changing the layout of your furniture is the easiest way to make the most impact. I do this to satisfy my need for change and the lack of funds in my decorating budget.
2. De-junk and organize.
De-junking and organizing is another one of the quickest ways to make an impact in your space. Staying organized is easier when there is a place for everything, and everything has its place.
3. Re-purpose an old piece of furniture.
There are unlimited possibilities here, depending on what materials and furniture you have on hande. You could use some old paint in the garage, or just some sandpaper and polyurethane. You could also use a piece of furniture for a different purpose than what it was originally meant to be used for. A fun idea is to stack some large similar-sized books and put a tray on top for a unique end table.
4. Rearrange your accessories.
Rearranging the accessories in one room, or even the whole house, can completely change your look. That is why having basically neutral rooms with bright accessories is the smartest and most cost-effective way to decorate. I talked a little bit about this in last week's post. One of my favorite things to do is collect all of the accessories in my house that are the same color and put them in one place, like the mantle.
5. Re-purpose a piece of fabric.
You can do anything with a piece of fabric. You can use it as art, recover a pillow, reupholster a seat cushion, or whatever you want. Fabric is always good to keep on hand for projects that come up when you are strapped for cash.
6. Raise your curtain rods.
Raising those rods makes a huge difference in the appearance of your ceiling height. Even if your window is in the middle of the wall, hanging your curtain rods a couple of inches from the ceiling will make the window appear larger, and also make your ceilings look taller. It's an old interior design trick, and I use it in every room and love it.
7. Use empty jars to store food on your kitchen counters.
You can use any jar/bottle to store anything: pasta, snacks, candy, cereal, fruit, and so much more. You can even choose items that coordinate with your decor. If you're using yellow as an accent color, pasta would be a great option. If your accent color is red, licorice is a cute idea. Make it your own!
8. Use an old basket to store rolled blankets.
The natural fiber basket will bring a nice textural element to your room, and it is more attractive and easier to store rolled blankets. My brother-in-law Isaac is a huge fan of this. I used to do this for them when I came home for a visit in college, and he was so impressed. It's something small, but it makes your blankets and even your basket a little classier.
9. Rearrange the art on your wall.
You can take art from one side of the room to the other, simply change out a few pictures, or go in a completely different direction. Because art is at eye-level, changing it up can make an enormous impact.
10. Take an unused scarf and make something with it.
Scarves make great throws, cushion covers, curtain tie backs, dresser scarves, table runners, or even pillow covers. They can sometimes be even cheaper than fabric. The sky's the limit here, especially if you're going for a "collected" look.
Having no budget for decorating doesn't have to cripple you. There are plenty of things you can accomplish while you're saving for your next project. Enjoy!

I like the blankets rolled in the basket idea! I am going to do that. I have a single blanket in a basket in our room, but I'm going to do it in the family room, too, with more than one. Then the cute ones won't get hidden at the bottom!
