In preparation for the new year, I have been doing research into what will be trending this year. I think it can be a useful tool in helping you find your style, or inspire you in ways that you wouldn't have thought of before.
- Interchangeable Accessories
- I feel that this has always been and will always be trending. It just makes more financial sense to buy neutral "big furniture" like couches, chairs, etc. and if your design tastes change, you can easily change the look with new accessories.
- My genius Mom, sews envelope enclosures for her pillows. That way, when she grows tired of her current style, she can just make new ones. It's also super helpful if you spill anything on your pillow; it's easily removed, washed, and put back on the pillow. I will never buy pre-made pillows again. If you want a good tutorial, click here. Or for the "no-sew" version - here.
- Ikat Fabric
- Ikat is a method of dyeing fabric. Odds are, you've seen it before, but just in case, here's what it looks like:
- I would use Ikat in small doses. It's a very strong pattern and used in large amounts can actually hurt the room and possibly even your eyes. I find it's best used as pillows, upholstering a small piece of furniture (like an ottoman or stool), or even curtains.
It comes in an unlimited number of patterns and colors. |
- Blue, Blue and More Blue
- I'm so glad blue is going to be popular in the new year because blue is one of my favorite colors. Almost all shades of blue are trending now. Some of the more popular hues are indigo, cobalt and turquoise. You can even use multiple shades of blue in the same room:
- Mixing Styles
- This can mean many things. It could mean a traditional chair with modern fabric, different style accessories paired together, or even just using more than two styles in a room. No one person has only one style. I'll have a post in a couple weeks about how to find which styles you like and how to effectively mix them to achieve your perfect look.
- Woodland Creatures
- Ever since the "What Does The Fox Say?" YouTube video went viral, everyone is all about the foxes. Other popular examples include owls, rabbits, elk, deer, moose, etc.
- Florals are Rumored to Make a Come-Back
- Floral fabrics layered in with geometric patterns can help you achieve the "collected" or "eclectic" look. Just make sure to keep the background of the floral neutral so it doesn't compete with the other patterns in the room.
- Sheer Curtains
- This one is pretty obvious. The more sheer the curtains, the more light is let into a room. Natural light does wonders for any room (except for perhaps media rooms)
- Light and Airy
- In recent years it's been all about the dark wood. However, since the light and airy feel is becoming more popular, lighter grain wood tones are making a comeback.
- Open Shelving
- I must confess, I'm not 100% on this trend. I think that closed storage is still preferable, but with some of the new organizational containers now available I think I could be converted.
- Mixing Metals
- This is one of the quickest ways to create the "collected" or "eclectic" look. Balance is key here though. You want to make sure you have enough hits of each type of metal you are using to make it look natural.

Great post with great information! I love the color of the cabinets on the first pic under the blue section (but not so much the mixing of the cobalt added in). Also, thank you for getting that dang fox song stuck in my head again... lol.
