To get started, pick out the frames. I decided to go with white frames, with white mats and a black inset on the mat. This was mostly because I found each of these frames for no more than $5 each at my local Michael's store. I bought everything they had at my local store in Provo, UT, then I went back for more they were still out of stock, so I drove about 45 minutes north to another Michael's and bought what they had too. The main thing to keep in mind is - Do they coordinate? They definitely do not have to be all the same, just look good together like in this one:
Then, I decided what pictures I wanted in my frames. I picked my favorite one of my husband and I for the center, and then I built from there. I picked pictures that would look good in the frames. But, anything looks good in white frames, so I was lucky.
Then, once you have all of your pictures in the frames, there is no better way to lay them out than on the floor. It can be laborious to 1- find a big enough space to lay everything out, and 2- find the right configuration that works with your style and wall space, but it's totally worth it when you're done.
The easiest way to hang them is to get something like a paint stirrer stick and put a screw through one end, making a picture hanger. You hang the picture on the screw, place the picture on the wall where you want it, and then press on the front of the frame where the screw is to make a mark on the wall where your nail needs to go.
Here's a good tip - Find where you want the center picture and hang that first. Then, all of the other pictures can be spaced evenly going out from there.
Then, grab a scrap piece of wood, paper or whatever you have laying around and cut it to the size of the space between each frame. (It looks WAY better if they are spaced evenly)
When you're done, it will look FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC!
I am in love with my picture wall and can update the pictures as our families grow :)
