Highwater Pants vs. Highwater Curtains

I know that high-water pants are kinda in right now with the hipsters...

But high-water curtains are not.  So, if you find an inexpensive set of curtains and bring them home only to find that you mis-measured, no need to worry! Easily fixable.

I had a similar problem with my bedroom curtains

They've been short for years, and I like the blackout feature, but they just weren't long enough.  So, when I redecorated my bedroom, I found a coordinating fabric with my color scheme and went to work making a border on the bottom of my curtains. This can easily be at the top if that's what you prefer, I'm just particularly fond of the bottom border.  The fabric I used was $6.50 a yard on clearance plus a coupon. So, I bought a few yards, plus a few yards of wide grosgrain ribbon.

CONFESSION-I am not by any means an accomplished seamstress. This is what the ribbon is for. It is a sewing cheat. It hides unsightly/crooked seams.

Here is the only hard part. Measuring. Just measure how long you need to make the new border, and make sure to allow as much as an inch for the top seam, and 1 1/2 to 2 inches for the bottom hem.
First you hem the right and left sides to the correct width of your curtain panel. Then you sew the fabric to your existing curtain. Just to make sure you have the perfect length (just grazing the floor) you might want to hang the curtains, and then pin the hem to the correct length. Then you can take it off and sew it.

The next thing is ironing. This is so tedious, but necessary for the ribbon to lay flat on the panel.
[My Mom is an incredible seamstress.  Everything she made for me or my siblings looks professionally made. She actually sewed for a living in college. - She ironed almost all of her seams, and I always used to think "Why is Mom ironing that?  It doesn't really matter..."  Oh, but it does - It makes your fabric fold better, and makes it look really polished and professional.]

Once you have ironed the seam out, you can start sewing the ribbon on. Its pretty easy, I usually sew the end onto the back, then sew down one side of the ribbon and then down the other side.

You can buy 2 inexpensive fabric shower curtains and do this to the bottom, or even one or two flat sheets.
Once youre done, you have a custom set of curtains that look pretty darn good!
