I'm not a fan of the matching dining set. They can be predictable and boring. The one I had was small and SUPER boring. (Classic hand-me-down apartment furniture at it's finest) This was fine for the first 4 years of our marriage, but my design style shifted a little, so I was craving a change.
(Can you blame me for wanting a new set?) So, wanting a sweet deal, I hit my local Craigslist and KSL websites to find a used table I could work with. Boy did I luck out! This baby was $25 and it came with 2 2-ft. leaves to boot. It has a double-pedestal base, and a Formica top, which makes it easier to wipe down.
Then I looked at the new table with our old chairs, and they didn't really match. Plus, they were pretty boring as they were. In a previous post, I mentioned buying some IKEA curtains and using the scraps for a lampshade. From those curtains (pictured above), I pulled my 3 favorite coordinating colors, teal, lime green & coral.
I have always wanted a bench in my dining room. So, I picked one color for the chairs, another one for the upholstery and another one for the bench. It sounded really crazy at first, but when it was all done, it looked surprisingly good.
My in-laws are very handy, and so we asked them to help us build the bench from some plans we found on the internet. They also have every tool we needed to reupholster our chairs, so we did that at their home too. It took a long 3-day weekend, but my husband and his parents built the bench while I sanded, painted and upholstered the chairs. Then my Mother-in-law and I painted the bench.
Warning! - This is a LOT of work, but I've never had so many compliments. It turned out great!
